What is a Landslide?
Landslide is the "the
movement of a mass of rock, debris or earth down a slope" and includes
rock falls, topples, slides, spreads and flows (mudflows or mudslides).
What causes landslide?
Landslide can
be caused due to rainfall, earthquakes, volcanic activities, changes in
groundwater, disturbance and change of a slope by man-made construction
activities or any combination of these factors.
Do we have landslide prone zones in Mauritius?
Yes. There are currently
three zones identified as high priority to landslide namely at
Chitrakoot, Vallee Pitot and Quatre-Soeurs.
Is La Butte still a landslide prone zone?
No. According to JICA
Landslide experts, the region of La Butte, previously a landslide prone
zone, is now considered stable. However, there is no termination stage
for a landslide zone, but still remain under monitoring.
